ESAST LANSING, MI — So you are planning to tailgate before Saturday MSU football game against Eastern Michigan on campus. What could go wrong? AAA Michigan is warning fans about certain dangersous aspects of tailgating.
First, AAA notes that tailgating has unique risks compared to backyard grilling because crowded parking lots place open flames, hot coals, propane tanks and flammable materials near vehicles and people. In small parking spaces, small grill fires can quickly spread to nearby cars, tents, coolers and other equipment.
Adrienne Woodland, spokeswoman for AAA The Auto Club Group, says most game day safety issues stem from a lack of attention.
“Many fans assume the danger ends when the cooking stops,” Woodland said in a release. “But hot coals and grills can remain dangerous long after kickoff. Taking a few extra minutes to shut everything down properly can prevent a fire and thousands of dollars in damage.”
Also, since post game tailgating is popular, designate a driver to get you home safely after the game.
The Spartans play Eastern at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The weather forecast says it’ll partly cloudy with highs in the low 80s.
